“高校時代から絵や短歌を趣味で制作し続けてきた。地元の雑誌で短歌を発表する機会はあったものの、自分の身の回りに咲いている草花を描いた絵や言葉は、ごく身近な知り合いや友人にだけ見せてきた。さっぽろ天神山アートスタジオでは、人生で初めて「しらない人」に向け、これまで書きためてきたたくさんの作品を展示することを試みるものです。”

“I have been making pictures and poems in my free time since age of high school. I had opportunities to express my poems on local magazine though, my pictures or poems which described flowering plants around myself were only for close acquaintances or friends. On the other hand, in Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio, the exhibition must be to “others” for the first time in my life. I am going to exhibit a lot of works that I made so far.”

6月19日から26日まで滞在中のアーティスト鈴木悠哉さんが制作展示を行っています。制作を続けながら会場に徐々に作品を展示していきます。以下、19日にArt & Breakfast Day内で行われたアーティストトークの模様を一部ご紹介します。

From 19th to 26th of June a resident Yuya Suzuki exhibits his works in Tenjin. The exhibition is progressing as he makes new works. A part of his artist talk in last Art & Breakfast Day in 19th is here.

「街を歩いて気になるポイントを写真で撮っておく。そしてそのなかからイメージを抽出する。一枚の

イメージじゃなくて、ひとつの文字みたいな形で作っている。それをならべると、なんとなく言語の構

造に似てるような形で。鑑賞者がそれを元に、言葉のようにというか、何かを自由に連想していけるよ

うな、そんな展示空間を作りたいと思ってるんです。」

「街の特徴も反映されたりするんだけど、特にその街の何かを表そうとはしていなくて。どちらかとい

うと、街が変わろうと国が変わろうと、人間が普遍的に持っているようなイメージ、原型みたいなのを

探している感じ。」

「自分にとっては移動することと、ドローイングすることが重要で。ドローイングには移動がとても関

与している。絵画や彫刻だったらスタジオ構えてやるとか、制作において物理的に定住型になると思う

んだけど、ドローイングてもう少し身軽で。メディアと移動し続けるというやり方がライフスタイルと

して自分にフィットしていると思う。」

質問「普遍的なものを抽出してると言ってたけど、もともとの形や色の特徴、例えば札幌なら札幌の色

や形が最後まで影響するってことはないですか?」

「明確にはわからないですね。街を歩いていて描き出すきっかけにはするけど、街を描きたいという気

持ちがないんです。ただ自分はそうだけど、人が何かを感じるということはあります。でも、ちょっと

不本意かな(笑)。それより例えばそれを全然違う文化圏の人が見てもなんとなく何か伝わるとかわか

るとか、そういう共通言語、普遍的な言語みたいなものとして描いていて。」

質問「ドローイングのシリーズの「city language」 というタイトルが、何か特定の街をイメージさせる タイトルではあるんですが、もうちょっとボヤかされたり、別の次元のタイトルだった方がかったんじゃないかと思ったり。」

「正直、タイトルは迷ってます(笑)。ひとまず、みたいな。言語の構造をイミテートしているような

感じ。漢字の構造だったら「へん」があって「つくり」があって。その「へん」のイメージをつくると

いう感じ。そういう言葉の構造と似たことをやっています。」

“I extract sample images from pictures which I was taking from working around the city. I make pieces such as form of letters rather than images. As they are arranged, they seem like structure of language. Observers can imagine something by their own way from my pictures. I wan to create this kind of spacial structure.”

“They are reflected from distinction of each city, but I don’t would like to express something about the city. It’s more like universal images which people bearing, wherever they are at any cities, any countries. I feel that I am seeking kind of archetypes.”

“For me, it’s quite important to move and drawing. Drawing and Moving are related deeply. When we make tableaus or sculptures, we need studio. Then we are fixed physically in our creation. On the other hand drawing is more light. I prefer the way which I can keep moving with media as a lifestyle.”

Question: ”You said that you extract universal things though. Do original distinctions vanish in the end at all? Or original shapes and colours still remain sometimes?”

“I’m not sure. I get motivations when I work in the city, but I don’t have any motivation to describe about city. I don’t want, but people feel not so often. It’s little bit reluctant response. I want to draw what can convey to the people if he/she was from completely different culture. I draw them kind of

mutual language or universal language and the like.”

Question: “The series title ‘city language’ makes me imagine somewhere specific city. How about this title honestly?”

“Honestly I’m still minding the title. Like for the time being. It’s like imitating of structure of language. For instance in Chinese character there are Hen part and Tsukuri part and so on in one character. It’s like to make new image of that kind of part. I’m doing what alike structure of language.”
