About the open call for residence program 2017-2018 winter:
Sapporo is one of the world’s more unique cities of its size, as its 2 million residents live in cold, snowy conditions for a good portion of the year. In Sapporo city hall one finds a snow safety station, which symbolizes the central importance of snowy life in this urban city. Urbanization was driven by the Sapporo Winter Olympics in 1972. Developments include road heating, underground passages and transportation infrastructure; winter entertainment includes sports and snow festivals, as well as all sorts of creative activities to energize the city.
When you look at Sapporo and Hokkaido within the context of Japan, this area boasts a very special natural environment, lifestyle as well as history. At the same time, when you look at the place without emphasizing national borders, geographically this area belongs to the subarctic region of globe. In this context, the life of people in Sapporo and Hokkaido are the southern reaches of a long line of subarctic culture. For the open call this year, and following a similar trajectory as that of last year, we hope to cross these two perspectives. Together with the creative minds of artists, we hope to encourage a great experiment to work toward seeing beyond boundaries.
Artists are invited to develop their ideas through work based on three key terms: Winter, Snow, and the Subarctic. The program offers an opportunity to assist the artwork and research that will drive the projects of invited artists. We look forward to receiving enthusiastic applications from artists and creators.
Program theme: “Winter, Snow and the Subarctic”

Project period: 6 weeks from Saturday, January 13th to Sunday, February 25th, 2018. (Artists are required to participate during this period).
Dates of arrival and departure are possible between Thursday, January 11th to Thursday, March 1st, 2018, respectively (Artists have access to the studio during this period, 8 weeks).
Tentative date for welcome party and artist talk: Sunday, January 21st, 2018

February 25th, 2018.
Number of artists: 2 (people or groups)
Please choose one of the following programs.
1 position for Exhibition Program: Create an exhibition through research practice.
1 position for Community Program: Participate in the Artist-in-School program operating within Japanese elementary schools. Participants are required to use a classroom as a studio for 2 weeks to create a project. By the end of the residency program, artists will provide a final presentation. Outside of this Community Program, artists will work in Tenjinyama Art Studios.
Note: About Artist-in-School (for Community Program)
Recently in Japan, it is quite common to find the classrooms in elementary and junior high schools, built extra-large during the high-growth economy, nearly empty due to low birth rates. The Artist-in-School program saw this ‘gap’ as a new site for artist-in-residence initiatives, so that artists could make use of empty classrooms as working studios in operational public elementary schools for a period of time. Exhibition Program
- 1st–4th week: project research
- 5th–6th week: production
- 7th–8th week: installation, exhibition (1 week) and taking down the work
Community Program
- 1st–3rd week: meeting with Elementary School, planning for Artist-in-School
- 4th–5th week: Artist-in-School (2 weeks)
- 6th–8th week: planning for presentation, presentation and taking down the work
Requirement:
Exhibition Program: a proposal of your project idea based on the program themes.
Community Program: a proposal of your project concerning the environment of elementary schools for the Artist-in-School program.
Eligibility:
・Any nationality, place of residence, sex or gender and age (you must be at least 18 years old when you start the residency).
・Applicants have experiences in the field of visual arts. (Students are not eligible)
・Applicants understand the aim of the residency program and present their results in the final week of the program.
・ Able to participate in events and activities organized at Tenjinyama art studio.
・ Be responsible for producing work, exhibiting and taking down the exhibition on their own and discussing with coordinators and the director of Tenjinyama art studio.
・Able to support themselves throughout their stay.
・Able to follow the regulations of the facility.
・Able to attend the opening event and the final presentation
・Able to speak English
The following support is given to artists participating in the program.
・Studio rent and heating expenses.
・ 1 artist (person/ group) ¥300,000 , travel cost (¥100,000 artist live outside of Japan, ¥50,000 artist lives within Japan) plus extra support for material fee.
・ Arrangement of translation volunteers, coordination with institutions and organizations.
・ Press materials and interaction with local art communities.
・ Documentation materials which Tenjinyama Art Studio has produced (photos and videos).
Studios: artist has access to :
・Accommodation studio A or B; one room per person or a group (open 24 hours).

・Other facilities in the building: Common areas on the ground floor / exhibition space / multi purpose rental studio.
* Common areas are open to public. Artists are required to consult with members of staff in advance regarding usage of this space.
Notes:
・Any expenses exceeding ¥300,000 must be covered by the artist.
・Facilities in the building except for allocated studios cannot be occupied.
* When using areas outside the residency studio, consult with staff to arrange the time and discuss the usage in advance.
・Overseas residents who need a visa to enter Japan are responsible for obtaining the correct documentation. In such case, Tenjinyama Art Studio will provide an invitation letter.
・ Artists from countries which have not concluded a tax treaty or a country which Japan has concluded the tax treaty with but where income is taxable may be liable for income tax on the sum provided to support their activities and transportation.
・Family and partner are acceptable, however the amount of support is only provided for the invited artist (i.e., family and partner may share the studio apartment, however no support for travel, food and other expenses: must be covered by themselves).

Selection and notification:
Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio and the committee will select artists based on the application forms and portfolios submitted. All applicants will be notified of the results by November 22nd Wednesday, 2017.
Juries:
Two guest jurors and the director of Tenjinyama Art Studio will finalize the selection of the 2017–2018 Winter open call. Jurors will be announced at the beginning of October.

Overview of Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio:
Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio is an artist in residence program and facility that opened as a project of Sapporo City in summer 2014. Surrounded by rich nature and a quiet environment, the building hosts 13 studio apartments, an exhibition space and common studios accessible to the community. It also functions as a resting place for all the visitors of the park. In addition, the atrium lounge on the ground floor is constructed as a communal area, where local people can drop in freely, to generate conversations between artists participating in the program on a daily basis as well as through various events, artist presentations and public projects.
