Guidelines for Application
About the 2016-2017 Winter residence program open call:
Sapporo is one of the world’s more unique cities of its size, as for a good portion of the year its 2 million residents live in a cold, snowy area. In Sapporo city hall one finds a Snow Management Office, which symbolizes the central importance of snowy life in this urban city. Urbanization was driven by the Sapporo Winter Olympics in 1972. Developments include road heating, underground passages and transportation infrastructure; winter entertainment includes sports and snow festivals, as well as all sorts of creative activities to vitalize the city.
When you look at Sapporo and Hokkaido within the context of Japan, this area boasts a very special natural environment, lifestyle as well as history. At the same time, when you look at the place without emphasizing national borders, originally this area belongs to the subarctic region of globe. In this context, the life of people in Sapporo and Hokkaido are the southern reaches of a long line of subarctic culture. For the open call in this year, we hope to cross these two perspectives. Together with the creative mind of artists, it will be a great experiment to work toward seeing beyond the boundary.
Artists are invited to develop their ideas through work based on three key terms: Winter, Snow, Subarctic. The program, together with the supporting institution of the program, Hokkaido University Creative Research Institution Research Support Office, offers an opportunity to assist the artwork and research that will drive the projects of invited artists. For instance, the Office could facilitate accessing research by Hokkaido University or arrange site specific investigations on the University campus where large amounts of snow resources are available in the urban environment. We look forward to receiving enthusiastic applications from artists and creators.
Program theme: “Winter, Snow and Subarctic”
Venue: Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio

Length of stay at the studio: Up to 8 weeks from January 14th Saturday to March 14th Tuesday, 2017.
* Artists are required to stay at the studio during the project period between January 20th Friday and February 28th Tuesday.
* Welcome party and artist talk are planned for either Saturday January 21st or Saturday January 28th.
* Presentation and exhibition of residency program is planned to be from Wednesday February 22nd to Sunday February 26th.
Number of artists: 3 (people or groups)
Requirement: A proposal of your project idea based on the program themes, a plan for how you might exhibit your work and a proposal for a workshop program.
Eligibility:
・Any nationality, place of residence, age (you must be at least 18 years old when you start the residence), sex or gender.
・Applicants must have experience of a previous artist in residence program. (Students are not eligible)
* Acceptable areas are visual arts, photography, film and design.
・Selected artists must understand the aim of the resident program and report their results at the end of the program (the form of the report presentation will be decided upon following discussion).
・ Selected artists are expected to participate in events and activities organized at Tenjinyama art studio.
・ Selected artists are responsible for producing work, exhibiting and taking down the exhibition.
・Selected artists must be able to support themselves throughout their stay.
・ Selected artists must abide by the regulations of the facility.
・ Selected artists must attend the opening event and the event for result report.
・ You must be able to communicate with the other selected artists in English.
The following support is given to artists participating in the program.
・Studio rent and heating expenses.
・ ¥250,000 (there is no extra support i.e. travel to Japan, food. )
・ Arrangement of volunteer support and cooperation with related organizations.
・ Press materials and interaction with local art communities.
・ Documentation materials which Tenjinyama Art Studio has produced (photos and videos).
Studios:
・Accommodation studio A or B; one room per person (open 24-hours).

regulations regarding the use of the rooms.
・Other facilities in the building: Common areas on the ground floor / exhibition space / multi purpose rental studio.
* Common areas are open to public. Artists are required to consult with members of staff in advance regarding usage of this space.
Notes:
・Any expenses exceeding ¥250,000 must be covered by the artist.
・Facilities in the building except for allocated studios cannot be occupied.
* When using areas outside the residence studio, consult with members of staff to arrange the time and discuss the usage in advance.
・Overseas residents who need a passport and visa to enter Japan must take responsibility for obtaining the correct documentation. In such case, Tenjinyama Art Studio will provide an invitation letter.
・ Artists from countries which have not concluded a tax treaty or a country which Japan has concluded the tax treaty with but where income is taxable may be liable for income tax on the sum provided to support their activities and transportation.
・Family and partner are acceptable, however the amount of support is only for the invited artist (for 1 person).

Selection and notification:
Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio and the committee will select artists based on the application forms and portfolios submitted. All applicants will be notified of the results by December 1st, Tuesday 2016.
Juries:
Following three guest juries and a director of Tenjinyama Art Studio will be finalized the selection of open call 2016-2017 Winter.

Overview of Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio:
Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio is an artist in residence program and facility
which opened in summer 2014 in Sapporo city. Tenjinyama Art Studio is a quiet environment surrounded by nature, 13 studio apartments, exhibition space and studios open for anyone to rent. The building is also open to people who are visiting the park to take a break. The atrium lounge on the ground floor is a communal area where anyone can drop in freely and artists participating in the program can communicate with local people on a daily basis through various events, artist presentations and open-to-the-public projects.
